Mission Garden Garlic Festival
July 17, 2021
Over the winter and spring Mission Garden grew a large amount of garlic. On Saturday July 17 we’ll have a Garlic Festival—an opportunity for you to learn about growing garlic and cooking with garlic.
We’ll have individual heads of garlic for sale as well as beautiful braids of multiple heads. Some garlic will be for eating and others will be meant for planting. We’ll give you planting tips for planting your garlic cloves in the fall in your winter garden.
Our docents and staff will be on hand to describe what we’ve grown and how we did it. We’ll also have community partners in the garden giving you all kinds of other information.
Community Partners & Demonstrations:
Barrio Bread's Don Guerra will bake Mission Garden's garlic inside his sourdough bread! A limited number of loaves will be for sale.
Vanda Pollard, Pima Community College Professor, and Jerome West, MG Docent, will demonstrate how garlic tastes raw, sautéed and roasted.
Lorien Tersey of Dream Flower Farm will bring the garlic she grew and talk about growing crops on a small urban farm in Tucson.
Don and Cris Breckenfeld and family also grow local seasonal produce on a small urban farm. They will be at the garden as well with their garlic and tips for growing.
The good garlic growers of Forever Yong Farms, located in Arivaca, AZ, will bring 'all things garlic'. Farmers John and Yong are the largest growers of Creole garlics in the Southwest!
Flora's Market Run has kindly allowed Mission Garden to use their wall space to hang garlic during curing which requires cool and shade. (You can see it there now!) Chef Kyle Nottingham will be offering a garlic demonstration at the festival.
Hope to see you at the Garden on July 17th.
