Soil Class with Emily Rockey

Thursday, August 26, 2021 6:00-7:30 PM, $35

Limited to 15 people, please register & pay to reserve your spot for this in-person class.

Fall is a great time to plant a variety of vegetables, grains, fruit trees and native plants. A critical part of successful planting, especially here in the desert, is creating and preparing soil. Fortunately for us, Garden Supervisor Emily Rockey has been working in the field of soil creation for years. Emily hosts us for an exciting hands-on discussion about soil – the living, breathing foundation of every garden. We'll go down to the roots and peel back the layers to discover what makes up this fascinating ecosystem so we can better understand how to "grow with the flow". Nature already knows how to make the best soil, and Emily discusses some simple ways to replicate and care for that balance in our gardens. This class is an in-person class at Mission Garden, limited to 15 people. While masks are optional in many outdoor settings at the garden, we require masks indoors and in outdoor situations where social distance is difficult to maintain.

In this video, Emily shows us how to harvest worm castings from a worm bin. Worms break down plant materials and other compostable waste resulting in nutrient rich castings.
