What could and should Tucson's Creative City of Gastronomy designation mean for the city of Tucson and its residents? What ideas are out there for possible future opportunities in the City of Gastronomy? In a short presentation, Drs. Eden Kinkaid and Ellen Platts will share the results of their recently-concluded research on the impacts and outcomes of Tucson's UNESCO Creative City of Gastronomy designation. These results focus on issues of social justice, community engagement, and different perspectives on these important questions. Eden and Ellen will then invite attendees to participate in thinking about their own hopes and dreams for Tucson as a City of Gastronomy, and lead the creation of a vision board to record these thoughts and ideas. The next day, this vision board will then move to a booth at the Tucson Meet Yourself folklife festival, where it will continue to grow and expand.
Eden Kinkaid recently earned their PhD in geography from the University of Arizona. Their work focuses on themes of food systems, place, race, and urban development.
Ellen Platts recently earned her PhD in anthropology from the University of Maryland. Her work focuses on the ways that cultural heritage can form the building blocks of equitable approaches to difficult social challenges, such as socioeconomic inequality, climate change, and uneven urban development.
