Fun with Fiber
Imagine living in the Sonoran Desert hundreds or thousands of years ago. Everything you needed came from the surrounding environment. Plants provided many materials for everyday life. For instance, you would use the fibers from agave leaves to make many household items.
In this workshop you’ll learn about many local fiber resources that peoples of this region have traditionally used. Participants will be inspired to experiment with fiber from plants and animals to make their own cordage at home, and learn to discover materials and tools they might encounter in their own backyards or neighborhoods. Learn hands-on all about these local fiber traditions.
Learn all about local fiber traditions with ethnoecologist Jesús García. Jesús serves on the board of Friends of Tucson’s Birthplace, and he is a Research Associate at the Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum, as well as recipient of the Southwestern Folklife Alliance Master-Apprentice Award for fiber arts.
